#2 - Internship Journey (About The City)

About The City

Flores Exotic Tours Headquarter Office in Ruteng
Arrived in Ruteng, I realized how small and homely this town is. I was dropped at Flores Exotic Tours headquarter office by the driver. The office is on the 2nd floor of the family house and it was simpler and smaller than what I imagine, but it was very comfortable since there are only 3 people in the office.
I met Om Leo's family, they were really warm and Om Leo himself dropped me off at Mama Ancik's house, the place where I would stay for 6 months.

I’m super thankful that God provides everything including a proper living place and kind-hearted people around me. From the family of Om Leo & Mama Lila (Founder and owner of Flores Exotic Tours), the family of Mama Ancik (owner of the house I live in), to GBI Rock Ruteng as my spiritual family. Each day is very colourful, amazing and productive. Thanks to them I don’t feel so alone since they always keeping me updated with new news; ask me to join their events like party, a celebration of some moments and other things; and even teach me some Manggarai language.

I believe God placed me in Ruteng, far away from my hometown, Surabaya a big city, for a 6 months internship for a wonderful reason. It still sounds funny to me actually when I thought about how I ended up here ...
the place I never thought I will visit and even more to live in.
God’s trying to show me why He placed me here and He wants me to learn awesome things here.
It hasn’t been a month since I live here, but I feel like I’ve learned a bunch of things I never knew before and my perspective of life has been opened.
Even if I didn’t get many tasks to do in the office, I do learn lots of things from Kak Tantie, Kak Inna, and Om Leo. I get to know how are the situation of East Nusa Tenggara’s tourism work, how to manage a tour business, the problems they face and how they handle them, and other things.

Living in a small city without a single modern Mall, sophisticated restaurant, movie theaters, fancy cafe, and sometimes poor signal...
It does make me easier to feel grateful for little things that are given to me either it’s foods, things, kindness, fun times, and life lessons.
To be accepted and treated with warmness really makes me feel so lucky and thankful that God really does provide everything that I needed through the people here.
Even looking at the clear blue sky at daytime and the wonderful moon and stars that can be seen clearly at night makes me feel blessed here.
I receive a lot more than I ever imagine and I always feel thankful for their sincerity.
They aren’t that rich but they appreciate everything they have in their simplicity and they never forget to help other people who are not as lucky as them.

Aside from being grateful, I learn a lot about false stereotype and how it is really easy to judge other people when we live in a big city where we could get anything easily.
Before I come here, I used to do the same... I thought that Ruteng is a really outdated town and it will be hard to get anything here. Meanwhile, when I finally got the chance to experience living here myself, it isn’t like that at all.
Ruteng is a small town.. yes.. but it doesn’t mean that this town is outdated. It isn't that hard to get things here, supermarkets, clothes shop, and restaurants here are sufficient enough to provide the people need here and the things they sell there, even if it's not as up-to-date as in big cities, but it isn't outdated too.
From what I experience when I talk to the people here I feel like they have wide knowledge and aren’t stingy to share their experiences and knowledge. There is only 1 phone provider that works here but with that limitation, the people here surprisingly know lots of things that are happening around the world.
That’s totally different from those stereotypes outside those people who live in a small town aren’t as smart as people who live in the big city or that they aren’t as skillful as people from big cities.
I learnt, that because there aren't many entertainments and distractions here, it is easier to focus on whatever we want to do, like studying or working.
Also, because there are many people who came from a not so well-off family, they have the strong will to study and work hard so they can be successful and help their family.

So that's the beginning of my life journey here in Flores as I do my internship. To be continued in other posts.
